We often say children are like sponges. They tend to soak up everything in their environment…sometimes even those things we wish they would not. But it is their nature to be curious, to be observant, and to lap up what is served up. As we leave childhood and go even further down the road are we over saturated with all we have learned or are we simply dried up? It may be we have reached our saturation point or we have become too complacent to to sop up anything new. But is in not important to continue to absorb? To learn. To grow. To evolve. Distractions…
I write this while watching two bright yellow finches squabble at the feeder. I think they are upset that the food has run quite low. One just buzzed the window. It is so difficult some days to stay focused, to stay on task. There are so many distractions. Oh, here comes a squirrel to check what has fallen and there is the neighbor walking his dogs—two Golden Retrievers and a Black Lab. Continue reading “Distractions…” »

Consider Contradicting…
One of the troubles with getting older is not that we have bones that creak—although they do; it is not that the print on the menu gets smaller and smaller—although it does. It is that we seem to lose the ability to look at things anew—from a different point of view, to look at something familiar in an unfamiliar way. Continue reading “Consider Contradicting…” »

Finding Balance through Equality
There are many ways our lives intersect with the challenges that surround our existence, with issues that effect us personally and those that touch us strongly. The trouble with succeeding in creating equality lies in the assumption that not being the same means not being equal. Continue reading “Finding Balance through Equality” »

Seek Bravery and Adventure
There is a lot to be said for taking comfort in the familiar. I rarely travel and not look forward to coming home to my own bed, my own kitchen, my own routines. That said, I’ve rarely taken a trip and held regret. I love to travel because I like to see something new and more importantly, I want to see something through the eyes of others. Attributes of Being a Warrior
Last year my running friend and favorite landscaper planted three Japanese maples for me. They stand erect at the front of my house and the moment their roots became planted in the earth, I felt the power of their presence. They are not just trees, at least not to me. They are my warriors. They guard me in a very unusual but powerful way. Sure, I know they are not like the electronic security system wired into some remote site that alerts the police of an intruder. Instead these security guards remind me of three vital contemplations of being a warrior. Continue reading “Attributes of Being a Warrior” »

Expect Only this Moment…
One of the aspects I so enjoy about living in North Carolina is that spring arrives on time. Even early…some years. It is not unusual to experience a warm sixty degree day in February. Unlike many things in life, spring in our corner of the world is typically pretty reliable. The short cold and rainy days give way to brilliant blue skies and warm winds.
My memory wants to say that springs have been pretty reliable…but this year seems to be an exception. Continue reading “Expect Only this Moment…” »

Are You Overdue?
My local library has a policy where they no longer alert you if a book you checked out is overdue. They wait for you to appear, perhaps sheepishly, and then whack you with the reality that the ‘free loaner book’ just cost you three dollars and twenty cents. I never grumble at the fee I owe. It is, after all, my fault. They told me when I checked it out when it was due back in. Second, it is the public library! If I cannot toss a few dollars towards this worthy cause, then who can I? Awake
While we are in the third month of the year, we are truly at the beginning of the evolving process of growth and change. Spring is the foundation for all things to grow, nurture, and manifest. Appropriately, spring is associated with the element of earth. Spring is when we can start to shake off the quieter feelings of the cold months and start anticipating and participating in nature as it changes before us. Continue reading “Awake” »

When seeking resolution, resolve to seek it from a place inside.
Twenty one days before the spring equinox several of us set a goal to do the practice of the Mother Sequence or Five Poses of our choosing everyday. Our desire was to usher in spring by getting stronger in both our bodies and our minds during the final days of winter. But living in a world surrounded by instant gratification—think instant food, instant technology, instant money from the money machine—it is even more challenging to adhere to a schedule of slow and deliberate work. In society, there is seemingly no time to wait. Continue reading “When seeking resolution, resolve to seek it from a place inside.” »
